1st Ocean Observers Workshop – 2017
The 1st Ocean Observers workshop was jointly organized by the Joint WMO-IOC Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology in-situ Observations Programme Support Centre (OceanOPS, formerly JCOMMOPS) and the European contribution to the Argo Programme (Euro-Argo ERIC), in collaboration with the Argo Project Office, the IOC/UNESCO and the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) Office.
It was held in Océanopolis Aquarium, in Brest, France, on 13-14 June 2017.
Workshop Motivations & Objectives
- Marine science popularization and outreach are becoming more and more important to raise awareness among the communities that a healthy ocean is vital for the well-being of generations to come.
- The existing outreach activities focused on in situ ocean observations are isolated and lack national and international visibility.
- The Ocean Observers workshop attempted for the first time to bring together different actors involved in marine science outreach activities to:
- do a review of the existing initiatives;
- favor discussions and collaboration between people engaged in marine science outreach programmes;
- give educators marine science information they could apply to their unique environments to raise awareness of the importance of the ocean for human life among school children and local communities;
- engage “new” schools, educators and private associations in ocean observing outreach activities;
- give scientists (researchers and PhD students tools and suggestions to share and make their results understandable by large public;
- federate a community around a coordinated project.
