The physics of water [video]

Learn about the properties of water and how they vary with temperature and salinity

application/pdf The physics of water - activity sheet

© Irish Ocean Literacy/The Water Forum

Individual or group activity

Duration: 1 hour

Type of activity: experiment

Language: English

Materials required for the experiments: a tub to hold water, food colouring, a kettle, a small vial or bottle

This video explains the different states of water (ice, liquid, steam) and their properties. It follows up with two experiments.

The first is about the different densities of cold water and warm water. The second is about the different densities of saltwater and freshwater.

All physics facts are linked to real-world phenomena and the importance of water for all life on the planet.

The activity sheet provides the protocol and materials needed for the experiments. The video can be watched on its own, without carrying out the experiments.

Follow up with other experiments:

Building a glider (12-18)

Experiment on salinity (12-18)

Follow up with a booklet on seawater:

Seawater (12-18)
